Goa Launches India’s First Statewide Fatty Liver Screening Program Covering 3 Lakh People
In a landmark health initiative, the state of Goa has embarked on India’s first-ever public health campaign dedicated to the early detection and prevention of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH). Over the course of three years, the Goa government aims to screen 3 lakh (300,000) people to halt the progression of fatty liver disease and its potentially fatal complications.
Partnership with Zydus Healthcare for the “Liver Forever” Program
The government of Goa has partnered with Zydus Healthcare, a subsidiary of Zydus Lifesciences Ltd, to launch the innovative “Liver Forever” program. Zydus Healthcare, known for its global expertise and innovation-led approach, plays a pivotal role in this large-scale screening and prevention effort.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane emphasized the program’s primary goal: “to arrest the progression of fatty liver into fatal conditions like liver cirrhosis and secondary type-2 diabetes.”
Integration with Goa’s Healthcare Infrastructure
The “Liver Forever” initiative will be seamlessly integrated into Goa’s existing healthcare framework, leveraging the recently established screening pilots conducted by the state’s Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) cell. Screenings will take place at Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) managed by the health department, while Goa Medical College (GMC) will serve as the tertiary care hub providing specialized diagnostics and advanced patient management.
A unique aspect of this initiative is its alignment with Goa’s universal health database, allowing healthcare professionals to track patients with comorbidities such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension — the key drivers of fatty liver disease — ensuring holistic monitoring and care.
Comprehensive Public Health Approach
Beyond initial screenings, the program includes lifestyle modification counseling, medical interventions, and regular follow-up care. This integrated approach aims to shift the healthcare model from reactive treatment to proactive, population-wide prevention.
Minister Vishwajit Rane highlighted Goa’s ongoing public health innovations, pointing to initiatives such as India’s first fully digital PHCs, free IVF treatment, AI-powered screening, and day-care oncology centers. He described the “Liver Forever” program as a strategic pillar in establishing Goa’s healthcare system as a gold standard nationwide:
“By conducting comprehensive screening of three lakh citizens and integrating advanced healthcare solutions, we are transforming public health in Goa. Our vision is to position Goa as India’s leader in public health, creating healthier and more productive communities for every family.”
Why Fatty Liver Disease Screening is Critical
Fatty liver disease is a growing health concern globally and in India, driven largely by rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. If left unchecked, MAFLD can progress to MASH, leading to liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and heightened risk of type-2 diabetes — all of which significantly increase morbidity and healthcare costs.
Early screening and intervention are crucial to identify at-risk individuals, impart lifestyle changes, and provide timely medical care to prevent serious health outcomes.
The Road Ahead for Goa
This unprecedented effort by the Goa government marks a critical shift towards preventive healthcare in India. With robust government support, healthcare innovations, and collaboration with Zydus Healthcare, Goa is setting an inspiring example for other states to emulate.
The success of this large-scale screening and management program will depend on the active participation of the public, healthcare providers, and continuous monitoring using data-driven strategies through Goa’s universal health database.
As the “Liver Forever” program unfolds, it promises not only to save lives but also to enhance the overall well-being and productivity of the population, reaffirming Goa’s commitment to a healthier future.
