Goa Launches Pioneering Statewide Fatty Liver Screening Program Covering 3 Lakh People
In a landmark public health initiative, the state of Goa is set to conduct large-scale screening for Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH). This first-of-its-kind campaign in India aims to screen 3 lakh individuals over a span of three years, marking a significant step towards early detection and prevention of fatty liver disease.
About the ‘Liver Forever’ Program
Goa’s government has collaborated with Zydus Healthcare, a global innovation-led life sciences company, to launch the ‘Liver Forever’ initiative. The core objective of this program is to halt the progression of fatty liver disease into more severe health complications such as liver cirrhosis and secondary type-2 diabetes.
The initiative is designed to be integrated with Goa’s existing healthcare framework, utilizing primary and community health centers (PHCs and CHCs) for widespread screening and diagnosis. Specialized diagnostics and advanced patient care will be managed at the Goa Medical College (GMC), serving as the tertiary healthcare hub.
Comprehensive Approach to Fatty Liver Disease
The screening campaign will not only identify cases early but will also extend support through:
- Lifestyle modification counseling to aid in disease management and prevention
- Timely medical intervention for detected cases
- Routine follow-up care to monitor patient progress and prevent relapse
Importantly, the program’s data will be synchronized with Goa’s universal health database, allowing healthcare providers to monitor comorbidities closely. Conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension—key contributors to fatty liver disease—will be tracked to enhance patient care and outcomes.
Transforming Goa’s Healthcare Landscape
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane highlighted that this initiative represents a strategic shift from reactive treatment methods to proactive, preventive healthcare at a community level. Goa’s health department, in tandem with GMC, is positioning this program as a cornerstone in India’s evolving public health paradigm.
Goa has been a trailblazer in several healthcare innovations, including India’s first fully digital PHCs, free IVF treatment, AI-assisted screenings, and specialized day care oncology centers. The Liver Forever program further cements Goa’s commitment to becoming a national leader in comprehensive health and wellness.
Public Health Impact and Future Prospects
By targeting a substantial population for fatty liver screening, this program aims to:
- Reduce the incidence of serious liver diseases and diabetes-related complications
- Improve quality of life and productivity through early disease management
- Set a precedent for other states to follow in managing non-communicable diseases
The success of this initiative could serve as a model for nationwide public health programs designed to combat lifestyle-related diseases through early diagnosis and integrated care pathways.
