The Vital Role of Nurses and Allied Healthcare Professionals in Modern Tech-Driven Care

In the evolving landscape of healthcare, nurses and allied healthcare professionals are emerging as indispensable pillars of the system. With the integration of technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the increasing need for skilled care, experts recently came together to discuss how these professionals are adapting to and shaping the future of healthcare delivery.

Rising Demand for Nursing Professionals

At a webinar titled “Allied Health and Nursing: Backbone of Modern Healthcare,” Helen Shaji J.C., Dean of SRM College of Nursing, highlighted the surging demand for nursing professionals both in India and internationally. This growth is driven by several critical factors:

  • The increasing burden of chronic diseases
  • An ageing population requiring ongoing care
  • Expansion of hospital infrastructure
  • Global shortage of healthcare workers

Despite this growing demand, Dr. Shaji emphasized a crucial concern — the low nurse-to-patient ratio in many institutions — and called for enhanced policy support to empower nurses effectively.

Challenges in Training and Technology Integration

Mary Marjeri, Chief Nursing Officer at Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, addressed the training challenges faced by nursing professionals today. The integration of AI and other advanced technologies into healthcare settings means that both students and experienced nurses encounter skill gaps when transitioning into real-world, tech-driven environments.

To bridge this gap, Ms. Marjeri recommended that healthcare organizations implement robust transition-to-practice programmes. These initiatives should focus on providing sufficient support, mentorship, and ongoing training to young nurses to help them adapt successfully to technological advancements and the demands of modern healthcare.

Transforming the Role of Allied Healthcare Professionals

D. Jagadeswaran, Dean of Allied Health Sciences at SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Chennai, expanded on the critical and evolving role of allied healthcare professionals. Traditionally seen as supporting roles, professionals such as medical laboratory scientists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and trauma care specialists are now recognized as key players in a multidisciplinary healthcare approach.

Government initiatives have further strengthened the position of allied healthcare providers, who contribute essential diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative care critical to patient outcomes.

The Growing Impact of Artificial Intelligence

Rashmi Shukla, Senior Scientist in Genetics at AIIMS, New Delhi, spoke about the transformative role AI plays in allied healthcare. AI empowers healthcare professionals by:

  • Enhancing diagnostic accuracy
  • Optimizing personalized patient care
  • Predicting healthcare outcomes
  • Improving accessibility to quality healthcare

Importantly, Shukla clarified that AI is not designed to replace healthcare workers but to alleviate their workload by automating repetitive tasks, thus helping to reduce professional fatigue and improve efficiency.

Conclusion: Supporting the Backbone of Healthcare

Nurses and allied healthcare professionals form the backbone of a modern, technology-driven healthcare system. With rising demand due to demographic and disease trends, their roles are expanding and becoming more complex. To meet these challenges, policy support, comprehensive training, and the strategic integration of AI are essential to empower these professionals to deliver the best possible care.

As healthcare evolves, continuing education, strong mentorship programs, and embracing technology will be key to fostering a resilient and responsive healthcare workforce poised to meet future needs.
