Free Medical Health Camp Enhances Healthcare Access for Lerie Residents in Kohima

On June 27, 2026, residents of Lerie in Kohima benefitted from a comprehensive free medical health camp, an initiative led by MLA Dr Tseilhoutuo (Ato) Rhutso. This health camp, part of the ward adoption activity under the Local Area Development Programme (LADP), was organized in collaboration with the Ward Adoption Committee (WAC) of the District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) Kohima. It was held at the Government Middle School, Lerie, aimed at providing vital healthcare services directly to the community.

Comprehensive Healthcare Services Offered

The health camp provided free consultations, minor surgical operations, diagnostic services including ultrasound, as well as ENT and dental check-ups. Residents had access to expert medical attention without financial burden, making this an important event for improving health outcomes in the area.

Leadership and Ongoing Health Initiatives

Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, representing the 9th Kohima Town Assembly Constituency, highlighted the success of similar healthcare outreach programs conducted across 25 locations in the state through the Chief Minister’s Mobile Operation Theatre (CMMOT). Over 1,000 operations, including surgeries and dental services, have been completed under this initiative, demonstrating significant community impact.

Dr Rhutso also announced that upcoming free medical camps will extend to neighboring areas such as Lerie Chazou, New Minister’s Hill, and New Reserve Colony, ensuring continued healthcare access to more residents. Previously, similar services were provided in Chandmari and PWD areas of Kohima.

The Role of the Village/Ward Adoption Committee (WAC)

Addressing the attendees, Dr Riku Khutso, Executive Administrative Commissioner (EAC) of Sadar, Kohima, and Convener of the WAC, explained that the committee operates under the DPDB’s LADP to adopt and support various wards annually. The WAC supervises developmental and welfare projects in coordination with elected representatives and government officials.

For this year, the WAC has chosen Ward 16, the largest ward under Kohima Municipal Council, incorporating areas such as Lerie, Lerie Chazou, New Minister’s Hill, and New Reserve Colony. Dr Khutso emphasized that these initiatives transcend politics, focusing on delivering essential health services directly to residents.

Acknowledging Community Support and Benefits

The Ward-16 Councillor, Aneü Khaming, expressed gratitude towards Dr Rhutso and the WAC for adopting Ward-16. He referred to the medical camp as a valuable opportunity to enhance the well-being of Lerie residents, highlighting the importance of accessible healthcare in the community.

Additional Health Screenings and Awareness

The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) Nagaland branch participated by offering cervical cancer screenings during the camp. Vincent Belho, General Manager of FPAI Nagaland, stressed that cervical cancer is a major public health issue, especially in India where it remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women aged 15 to 44.

Belho underscored that early detection through regular screenings and timely treatment is crucial to saving lives. He also highlighted the importance of HIV prevention strategies such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), encouraging individuals to visit the FPAI Centre at Daklane for a range of reproductive health services including HIV testing and family planning.

Collaboration with the District TB Centre

In line with the ongoing 100 days campaign for TB elimination, the District TB Centre Kohima, led by Dr Chibenthung Kithan, also joined the health camp. The team brought an AI handheld x-ray device to screen vulnerable populations effectively, aiming to detect and prevent tuberculosis at the grassroots level.

Community Leadership in the Health Camp

The program was chaired by Kevilezo, Chairman of Lerie Council, and included prayers from Neizekhonuo Tethlem, President of the Women’s Organization. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from K Wati Tzudir, Vice Chairman of Lerie Council, marking a successful community health outreach.

Conclusion: Strengthening Healthcare Access in Lerie

The free medical health camp in Lerie represents a significant step toward improving healthcare accessibility and awareness in Kohima’s largest ward. By integrating efforts from elected officials, health organizations, and community leaders, this initiative serves as a model for delivering essential health services directly to people’s doorsteps.

With plans to expand similar camps to nearby areas, the program promises ongoing support for the health and well-being of Nagaland’s communities.
